Wong’s Benevolent Association Celebrates 38th Anniversary

Women of the WBA Chorus Sing Beautifully for Guests

Last Sunday I was able to attend the 38th Anniversary Dinner of Wong’s Benevolent Association (WBA) in Chinatown at Floata Restaurant. The WBA has been a key driver of important historical achievements in Chinatown.

In 1973, the WBA was instrumental in establishing the Chinese Cultural Centre of Vancouver with the support of three levels of government, 53 community organizations and many enthusiastic individuals.

A full city block was designated in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown, with the entire complex completed by 1981. The completion of the Dr. David Lam Multipurpose Hall, and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden (developed by the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Garden Society) also enhanced Chinatown in 1986.

It was a pleasure to break bread with leading members of the WBA, and to learn more about this august Vancouver institution and the many contributions they have made and continue to make to the vitality of our city.
